GeogAtoZ Day 1: A is for "Around You" 🌍
Welcome to day one of #GeogAtoZ : Fieldwork! In
celebration of the National Festival of Fieldwork Month by the
Geographical Association, we are kicking things off by looking at the world
right on your doorstep.
Geography starts the second you look out your window.
A: Around You.
Look Closely: The Human Footprint
Take a moment to look around you right now. What are the
signs that humans have shaped the landscape? Geography is all about patterns,
and your neighbourhood is full of them. Ask yourself:
- What
are the housing types? Rows of terraced, semi-detached or detached
homes? Flats, maisonettes, or high-rise apartments? What does the overall
settlement pattern look like? Can you describe it? Is it from many
different times?
- Where
do people gather? Are there local shops, massive supermarkets,
dentists, doctors, or community centres? Where do people go to get things
mended, drop off a parcel, or practice their faith?
- How
do people move? Look at the roads, bus stops, tram-lines, and cycle
lanes. Is the area pedestrianized, or is it dominated by cars?
The Traffic Pulse 🚗🚴
The way a neighbourhood handles transport tells a massive
story about its priorities. Next time you look at your local streets, consider
the infrastructure:
Are there low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), low-emission
zones, or ultra-low emission zones (ULEZ) like the ones in London? Look at the
road markings—who do they prioritize?
Think about the daily rhythm of your area. When does
the rush hour (or period) peak? Where does the traffic bottle up, and what
measures (like traffic calming) are in place to slow things down?
Signs we are here
- Land
use: Homes, shops, where things are left, made or mended,
places for leisure and fun.
- Housing
types: Flats, maisonettes, apartments, rows of terraced,
semi-detached, detached, high-rise buildings.
- Shops
and services: Supermarkets, local stores, dentist, doctors,
pharmacist, health centres, libraries, places we get things done
(PostOffice, delivery locker).
- Getting
around: Roads, bus & cycle lanes, bus, train, tram stops,
pedestrian zones.
- Traffic
and congestion: Calming and connections, LTZ, ULEZ, congestion, red
routes, road markings, parking – cycle, car, busy times - rushhour
patterns.
Level Up Your Fieldwork: Local Area Bingo! 🎯
Ready to turn these observations into a game? Try creating or playing Local Area Bingo!
Try these three fieldwork challenges:
- The
360-Degree Turnaround: Stand in one safe spot in your town or city.
Can you spot a full bingo card's worth of urban features just by spinning
360 degrees?
- The
International Comparison: If you compared an urban area in the UK to
one in the USA, what would change? Would the shops, housing types, and
road layouts look the same?
- Virtual
Fieldwork: Can't head outside today? No problem! Fire up Google Street
View and do some digital exploring to compare different locations around
the world.
Now it's your turn. What can you see from your window right
now?
Design your own local area bingo card from scratch, snap
some photos of your neighbuorhood's unique geography, and share your findings!
Don't forget to use the hashtag to join the nationwide celebration of
fieldwork.
